Attention BP Employees,

As financial markets continue their declines from the start of the year, we want to make sure that investors know that you do have options for how to approach this market in its current condition. First off, we would highly recommend you discuss your individual situation with one of our experienced financial advisors to make sure you have the proper guidance in assessing what the risks are. Choosing whether to “ride it out” or possibly reduce your overall risk level is a personal decision that each investor should consider and weigh the pro’s and con’s of before making any changes.

If you are someone who is inclined to reduce your overall risk, these allocations are designed to do just that. But changing your allocation at this point does come with the risk that financial markets have already priced in the bad news and could move higher from here – meaning that if you reduce your exposure to stocks and they begin to bounce back, then you would not be participating in those moves to the same degree as you were before. Alternatively, if the market keeps deteriorating, reducing the risk of your investments will likely insulate you to varying degrees from additional losses depending on the level of risk reduction you ultimately decide to implement.

As noted above, we cannot overstate the importance of having an experienced, professional financial advisor help you determine what is the best approach for you given your individual risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term goals, etc. This is a free service offered by our firm to all BP employees and retirees.
